Best Senior Discounts

A lot of companies have made cutbacks and no longer offer senior discounts like they once did. Thankfully, some businesses across the country still offer reduced prices for those of us in our golden years. From Airline Tickets to Services, we’ve got you covered! Our list covers a variety of categories and each listing has been hand-checked on the company’s website to ensure its accuracy. Remember when using this list that there are often terms and conditions associated with these discounts. If in doubt, check the website.

Senior Discounts for Airline Tickets

It’s hard to find a major air carrier that still offers lower prices to seniors. Here are the top four airlines in the US and their seniors’ discount policy.

American Airlines: No, sorry. American Airlines used to offer a discount to seniors but no more.
Southwest Airlines: No, sorry. In December 2019, Southwest ended its senior discounts.
Delta Airlines: According to their website, senior fares are available on certain routes. Call them at 800-221-1212 for more information or to book a flight.
United Airlines: United offers senior fares to selected travel destinations for customers 65+. Call 800-864-8331 for details or select the senior category on their website when you book.

Senior Discounts for Car Rentals

Looking to rent a car? There are some deals for seniors out there. A couple of companies, Avis and Budget (owned by the same parent) offer an AARP discount while Hertz and Thrifty have their own policies. Be sure to look around and make sure that your discount is better than the company’s other offers or that of their competitors.

Alamo: No, sorry. Alamo doesn’t offer senior discounts.
Avis: Only available with an AARP card, you can save up to 30% off their base rates.
Budget: You can save up to 30% off base rates but this offer is only available with an AARP card.
Enterprise: No, sorry. Enterprise doesn’t offer a senior discount.
Hertz: Customers 50+ save up to 20% off Hertz’s base car rental rates.
National: No, sorry. There’s no senior discount at National.
Thrifty: Save 5%, on time and mileage charges only, on the rental of any car type.

Senior Discounts for Cell Phones

The three largest cell phone carriers all offer discounts for seniors. Be sure to ask what each plan covers and whether there are hidden charges or overage fees.
Verizon: You can get a discount at Verizon. Seniors can get one cell phone line for $60 a month.
AT&T: Seniors 55+ are eligible to get 1 line for $60 (a month) or 2 lines for $80 at AT&T.
T-Mobile: The T-Mobile Essentials 55+ plan is $55 for 2 lines. You must be 55 or older to qualify.

Senior Discounts in Drugs Stores (including Prescriptions)

Most drugs store are cutting back on their senior discounts. At the time this article was written, only Walgreens and Rite Aid have seniors’ days where you’ll get a discount off most non-prescription items. CVS doesn’t have senior discounts but they do have a points card available to all their customers. Walmart and Costco rely on their low regular pricing to get your business.

CVS: They do not offer a senior discount, per se, but they do have a reward program called Extracare. Extracare holders earn 2% back in ExtraBucks Rewards every time they use their card. Some conditions apply.
Walgreens: Once a month seniors save 20% off eligible, regularly priced items. You must have a MyWalgreens account to get this discount. As for prescriptions, Walgreens has a prescription savings club which costs $20 for individuals per year or $35 for a family per year. Members get special prices on literally thousands of generic and brand-name medications. As a bonus, members also get 5-20% savings on most immunizations and a 10% bonus on Walgreens Brand and Nice! products. Some restrictions apply. Check your store for details.
Walmart: Walmart offers a 30-day supply of a number of medications for only $4 on a list of popular medications. You can also get a 90-day supply of these same medications for $10. View the list here.
Rite Aid: The first Wednesday of every month at Rite Aid is dedicated to senior events and savings. Seniors with a wellness+ card get 20% off regular price, in-store purchases on that day. Get a Rite Aid wellness+ account here.
Costco: The Costco Member Prescription Program (or CMPP) isn’t an insurance program. All Costco members and dependents who are members of CMPP are eligible to receive discounts on all their medications. Become a member; get the discount!

Senior Discounts for Hotel Discounts

Special prices for seniors are still widely available in the hotel industry. Most of the major players offer them. Just be sure to check that your senior discount is better than other discounts offered.
Best Western: Guests 55 and older can save up to 15% on room rates at Best Western.  Where available, seniors enjoy a complimentary breakfast and free WIFI.
Choice Hotels: The Choice group of companies, which includes such names as Cambria, Comfort, and Quality, has senior discounts. Senior travelers are eligible for a 10-30% discount off hotel room rates when booking directly online.
Hilton: If you are age 60+, you can join Hilton’s Senior HHonors. It’s a program that rewards seniors with discounted rates, free nights, and savings at Hilton restaurants. It’s like their HHonors program but with a little bit extra for older folk like us.
IHG: Senior travelers savings on the non-discounted room rate at any participating IHG hotel. IHG brands include Holiday Inn, InterContinental, and Crowne Plaza but to name a few. Savings are available to guests who are 62 years of age or older.
Marriott: Seniors 62 and over are eligible for a special rate providing they show ID and the reservation is in the name of the senior.
Wyndham: Guests 60 years and older can enjoy Wyndham’s Best Available Rate when they stay at participating Wyndham hotels. Make sure to ask for the seniors’ rate!

Senior Discounts on Recreation and Fitness

Looking to take in a flick? Here are three chains that will make it a little easier on your pocketbook. Live near a Showcase Cinema? They’ll even give you a discount on popcorn! As for other things to do, we even found theme parks and a chain of fitness clubs with special senior pricing!
AMC: Seniors 60 and over save on movie tickets every day. You must select senior pricing when checking out online.
Anytime Fitness: The Anytime Fitness people are happy to offer not only a senior discount but discounts for students and the military too. It is, however, up to each location to opt in and offer these discounts. Check with your local club directly to learn what discounts are available at a club near you.
Cinemark: They offer seniors special prices all day on any movie but some conditions apply.
Dorney Park & Wild Water Kingdom: Ever in Allentown, PA? Well, Dorney Park & Wild Water Kingdom is located there and they offer a senior discount ticket. You get it at their front gate when you show a valid ID. Seniors are considered anyone age 62 or older.
Fun Spot: Do you like roller coasters? Maybe you want to take your children or your grandchildren out for a special day. With parks in Georgia and Florida, Fun Spot offers a substantial senior citizen discount to their parks. You get $6 off their single-day pass. That will help pay for some snacks! The discount can only be redeemed at the gate and you must provide proof with a valid photo ID.
Showcase Cinemas: They offer customers 60+ a discount, at select cinemas, every Wednesday. That applies to all movies and premium fees are waived where possible. They also offer deals on some concession stand items!

Senior Discounts In Restaurants

Most of the large restaurant chains no longer offer senior discounts simply because their profit margins don’t allow for it. Perhaps other than grocery stores, the restaurant business is one of the most competitive in the country.

Applebee’s: Applebee’s is one of the few large chains that still has senior pricing. They offer a special discount of 10% to 15% to those who are above the age of 60 at participating locations.
Brusters: It’s ice cream time! Their free Kid at Heart card entitles seniors, 60 and over, 25 cents off each purchase you make from then on at Brusters. Hey, every little bit helps!
Carrows: They offer special valued priced breakfast and lunch/dinner menus for seniors aged 55 and older.
Chilis: Discounts for seniors vary by location. Contact the restaurant directly for information on discounts.
Cicis: Pizza chain Cicis says on their website, “Many of our restaurants do offer discounts. However, since most of our restaurants are individually owned, discounts vary by location. We suggest contacting your local Cicis to inquire about discounts offered at their specific restaurants. Please refer to our locations page to locate a Cicis near you.”
Corky’s Kitchen And Bakery: Corky’s has a special menu for seniors, 55 & older. They also have a “Senior Frequent Diner Card” where every 10th senior meal is free!
Dairy Queen: Time for a Blizzard or Peanut Buster Parfait? Some locations offer a 10% discount to seniors but it varies by location and day of the week.
ElPolloLoco: They offer a 10% discount (to a maximum of $1) to guests 60 years of age or older.
Fazoli’s: Hungry for Italian? Many locations offer Senior Meal Deals starting at just $4.
IHOP: No senior discounts but IHOP offers a special 55+ menu with smaller portions at a price you’ll love.
Jack In The Box: If you’re hungry for a burger then some Jack In The Box locations offer a seniors discount but it varies from location to location.
Macayo: 55+ or older? Well, get 20% — yes 20% — off your bill at Arizona’s Macayo. Get your senior discount card and use it any time. You can’t use it for alcohol purchases but you probably already knew that.
Scott’s Seafood: Ever in Sacramento? Get a Seniors Club Card and get 20% off your meal anytime (with a few exceptions like holidays).

Senior Discounts In Retail Stores (including Grocery)

A lot of retail stores now rely on a loyalty card system and make it available to all their customers. Some still offer special pricing to seniors.
Amazon: Amazon doesn’t discount their products but they do discount their Prime membership. It’s available for half price for qualifying government assistance recipients. What do you get? Free delivery, award-winning shows, and movies plus deals just for Prime members. Oh yeah, unlimited storage for your online photos. Go here for more information and to sign up.
Dirt Cheap: Dirt Cheap purchases liquidations, overstocks, out-of-season goods, customer returns, and closeouts from manufacturers, distributors, and other retailers. They get it for less so you pay less. Dirt Cheap has over 100 locations throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee. They offer a senior citizen discount every Tuesday. If you’re 60 and older, you’ll receive 10% off their already low prices.
Fred Myer: They offer a senior discount on the first Tuesday of every month to those 55+. Seniors can take an additional 10% off selected items. These items include private brand groceries and nutrition, apparel, shoes & accessories, toys, sporting goods, auto & garden, most electronics, and Fred Meyer jewelers. Whew, that’s quite a list!
Harris Teeter: The neighborhood food and pharmacy Harris Teeter offers a discount every Thursday. If you’re 60+, you’ll get a 5% discount. That’s pretty impressive for a grocery store.
Jiffy Lube: Some Jiffy Lube service centers offer senior discounts, but it varies from location to location. Call ahead to your local store to determine if a discount is available.
JOANN: JOANN has periodic seniors days. On those special days, seniors get 20%. Who’s a senior? Anyone 55 years of age or older. You must present a state-issued photo ID for proof of age and some other conditions apply. Visit their seniors’ page to find out the next date.
Kohl’s: Kohl’s offers a 15% discount every Wednesday in their stores. You have to be aged 60+ to qualify and you must have a valid ID. This discount can’t be added to any other.
Lenovo: Computer giant Lenovo offers 5% on top of e-coupons and instant savings. That’s a substantial discount on their durable ThinkPad and budget-friendly Idea brand personal computers. Lenovo Thinkpad is my laptop of choice and I can tell you they sell excellent products.
Michaels: Michaels, of arts and crafts fame, offers a 10% senior discount on almost everything in the store. Even sale items! You must be at least 55 years old and a few exclusions apply.
New Seasons Market: On Wednesdays, customers 65 years of age on older receive 10% off most items.
Top It Off Frozen Yogurt: Top It Off is located in Roseville CA. If you’re there on a Tuesday or a Wednesday enjoy a 10% discount on their yummy treats.

Seniors’ Discounts on Services

Great Clips: Seniors save with at least $2 off their already low regular haircut prices. You must be 65 and older to qualify for this discount. No coupon is needed but remember to tell them you’re a senior before the cut. This discount is at participating salons and may vary by location.
Mr. Rooter: Need plumbing services? Some Mr. Rooter franchisees offer a 10% discount to seniors. Check with your local store to see if they are one.
You’ve Got Maids: Each You’ve Got Maids office has a senior citizen discount on housekeeping but you do have to ask for it at the time of the estimate. Note that you can’t combine this senior discount with any other deal.

But There Must Be More!

Believe it or not, a number of the sites on the Internet are automated and use computer robots to search out their listings. So if you’ve found a seniors discount site full of inaccurate information, that’s why. I spent a lot of time on this article going to each of the sites to confirm if they really offered a discount.
